Basilica of Notre Dame

The Basilica of Notre-Dame is the main cathedral of Catholics in Swiss Geneva . It occupies the main place in importance for the pilgrims who make the way of Jacob. In the cathedral they are provided with shelter.

A bit of history

The basilica was built in the middle of the 19th century according to the best canons of the Gothic style. The building of the temple is fundamentally different from other Geneva buildings. The main material used in the construction of the cathedral was sandstone. Before him, only brick and stone were used. This significantly distinguishes the building of the cathedral from the surrounding city buildings.

What to see?

Not less remarkable is the interior of the cathedral. A huge number of stained glass and bas-reliefs have been well preserved since the erection of the temple. Some of them appeared much later. The cathedral houses various Catholic shrines, but the main value is the sculpture of Our Lady. It is made entirely of snow-white stone. Gifted to the cathedral by Pope Pius IX. Then, in 1859, the basilica was consecrated.

In 1981 the cathedral was completely restored, and it became available for visits. Visiting the cathedral is free, but you can not come in open clothes.

How to find the cathedral?

From the railway station to the cathedral you can get there by going south through the station square. Another religious landmark of Geneva is St. Peter's Cathedral , which is also mandatory for a visit.
