Belize City Attractions

Belize City is famous for its history and architectural attractions that attracts tourists here. For example, the Old Bridge Bridge , connecting the northern and southern areas, or picturesque embankment, built up by cute little houses, almost at the walls of which the sea splashes. Attention deserve the Government House and Marine Terminal . An interesting place is the green park of Batfield , to which the street market is adjacent. In the Museum of Belize, you can see a stunning collection of Mayan civilizations. The list of amazing places and objects is large enough, everything is interesting here literally.

Natural attractions

  1. Batfield Park . This park, which today is a place for walking, has a long history. From the XVII century citizens gather here for political meetings, meetings with political figures are held. But mostly visitors enjoy just walks. Moreover, next to the sidewalk are traders who sell fruit, desserts, tacos. There are many comfortable benches in the park so that you can rest. Mass events, celebrations, concerts are held here, Christmas is celebrated.
  2. Belize Reef . The Belize barrier reef is located in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second most important on the planet. Its main part is located in the territorial waters of Belize. During the 1998 hurricane, the reef suffered severe damage, but was gradually restored. Thousands of divers and ordinary tourists are eager to see the life of the oceanic reef. Research of the reef is possible during the year, since the water temperature is always 23-28 degrees. In the reef area there are several reserves and protected areas.

Architecture and museums

  1. The Cathedral of St. John . The cathedral was built in the early 1800s. At first it was the church of St. John, but after the founding of the Diocese of Belize it was given the status of a cathedral. It is the oldest Anglican church, not only in Belize, but throughout Central America. Four coronations of the Mosquito Kings were held in the church. The cathedral is located at the intersection of Regent and Albert. The church was built by slaves of brick, which was brought from Europe on ships where it served as a ballast. Construction lasted from 1812 to 1820 years. Inside the cathedral is beautifully decorated. It is decorated with intricate stained-glass windows, mahogany benches, many other architectural highlights and, of course, an antique organ. On the territory of the temple is the oldest in the country cemetery Yarborough.
  2. The lighthouse of Baron Bliss . A lighthouse was opened in 1885. A white and red structure 16 meters high was named after the benefactor of Belize, Baron Bliss. He himself was never in Belize, but was impressed by the hospitality of this country. The Baron was a traveler and fisherman. According to his will, he was to be buried near the sea next to the lighthouse. In memory of the Baron, a lighthouse was built in Belize City, which is now one of the symbols of Belize. It is depicted on alcoholic beverages, cups, souvenirs, used for advertising purposes. Of course, it is used for its intended purpose: for adjusting ship and boat traffic.
  3. Adjustable bridge . The dilapidated bridge in Belize is famous for being the only drawbridge in the world with a manual drive. It was built in 1923. Twice a day, four workers manually open it to skip boats. The bridge connects the northern and southern parts of Belize, it is thrown across the creek Oulover. Several times in its history during the hurricanes such as Hatti and Mitch bridge was damaged. At the beginning of the XXI century, major repairs were carried out and even thought was to automate the drive, but locals did not want to lose one of their sights.
  4. National Museum of Belize . On the coast of the Caribbean Sea in 1857 was built a royal prison. It is in this building today that the National Museum of Belize is located. Like many other buildings, it was also built of English bricks, which came here as a ship's ballast. On each window of the prison there was a sign with the name of the prisoner. The main entrance to the museum served as a corridor in which public executions took place. The museum in this building is located in 1998, it was repaired and on February 7, 2002 the National Museum of Belize was opened. Here are artifacts of the Mayan era, exhibits reflecting the history of the colony and the life of various ethnic groups living in Belize. In the museum you can see masterpieces of the Maya Indians, collections of coins and stamps, unique plants. An excursion to the real prison cell is taking place. The museum also provides its premises for temporary exhibitions.
