Dirkholey Cape Reserve

On the southernmost point of the mainland Iceland is Cape Dirholia, locals call it "hole in the door." This name is not accidental, there are rocks of interesting shape, reminiscent of the openings at the door. Thanks to the zealous work of natural wind and sea, such an arch and turrets were formed. These rocks are considered volcanic. The place where the cape is located, simply captivates with its majesty, vast expanses and absolute solitude. It is this place that tourists choose as one of the best attractions that are definitely worth visiting in Iceland. However, not only tourists are attracted to this place, but also directly attracts photographers from around the world. After all, near the cape, one of the most fascinating beaches around the globe spills its banks.

How did Cape Dirholy originate?

For many hundreds of centuries, water gradually destroyed rocks from volcanic lava, which was about 100 meters in height. After the aftermath of the eruptions, incredible beauty of the rock formed under the water.

These rocks confidently rise above the beautiful sandy wastelands, and only a few small groups run a little deeper into the immeasurable ocean. What is most interesting, it's so calm here that it seems that this is the place where you can find harmony with yourself and just enjoy the silence and sounds of nature. When you go to the rocks, then on the way you will meet a narrow jumper. With her help you can climb to the very edge of the cliff. When you stand there, it seems that you are on the nose of a huge ship and you feel the taste of freedom. Here, incredible energy accumulates, piercing rocks, arches, wind and even glaciers on nearby mountains.

Amazing colors of rocks

These rocks amaze every tourist with an unusual combination of colors, typical of Iceland. The color of black sand smoothly turns into shades of gray wet stones. And the constant change in the color of the sky (because of unstable weather conditions) and the amazing saturated blue color of the ocean is simply mesmerizing.

From simple sight to the nature reserve

Cape Dirkholey is loved not only by tourists and locals, but by feathered friends they do not pass by. Bird nests are creating their nests here - dead ends. Therefore, the cape has turned into a protected area. It is this place that is rightly considered a bird market. Dead ends dig holes, there are their nests. And they choose only those places in which there is a large layer of peat.

Dirholy you can not see in the spring. At this time, the nesting of birds takes place, approximately from the middle of May and until the second half of June, the cape is completely closed.

How to get there?

In order to get to this incredible natural beauty, it is necessary to go the hard way. Not far from the city of Vic , in the eastern side of Skogar is Cape Dirholia. Many tourists first travel "autobahn", then move on the grader with an approximate speed of about 20 km / h. Be careful, because there are very large and sharp stones that can pierce the wheels. When the grader goes uphill, you will come across a narrow path that looks like a serpentine. Therefore, parting with the oncoming car is quite difficult. And then, when you are at the highest point, you will be amazed at the scales of the vast expanses.

When going on a trip to Dirholia, be sure to wear clothes that do not get wet and do not blow. And in order to get warm a little, a thermos with hot tea is perfect. And, of course, do not forget about the camera, because such a unique place should capture every tourist.
