Why is the Black Beach in Iceland so called?
Black Beach, or Reinisfiyara, as it is called in the country, is a five-kilometer strip of fine black sand stretched across the Atlantic Ocean. If we talk about why the beach is black, then it should be pointed out that this is the result of the work of volcanoes, operating for a long time. It is known that during the eruption of the volcano, lava, hot melt of rock in liquid form was poured from its mouth. Reaching the waters of the ocean, the lava slowly cooled and remained at the very edge of the coast in the form of a homogeneous rock. The ocean, gradually and for more than a century (if not millennia), broke a solid frozen lava into billions of small particles and thus created one of the most beautiful and fantastic beaches on our planet.
Rest on the Black Beach in Iceland
Despite the fact that Reinisfiyara beach is located in the south of Iceland, only the most hardened people can swim here, as the water in the ocean is very cold. However, this fact does not stop the tourists, who are striving to look at local beauties. Most often there are rains, windy, and in the black strip of the beach noisy powerful waves crash. Some places on the beach and in the water rise basalt columns of black color, resembling their own kind of fingers.
These basaltic rocks Reynisdrangar, according to the ancient Icelandic legend - petrified and frozen trolls, which intended to sink an Icelandic ship with sheep. However, with the onset of the morning these creatures turned into gloomy rocks.
