According to one of the many versions of the dog Newfoundland was named after its homeland - the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Originally it was used as a working dog, capable of carrying heavy loads. In addition, this water dog, as it was called, dived and helped the Canadian sailors pull water from the network with fish, and could also unmistakably determine the shore in a fog or during a storm. Therefore, Newfoundland was also called a diver by the people .
Later this strong and beautiful dog spread all over the world. Today a Newfoundland dog can be a domestic pet, a lifeguard on the water, a guide , and even a military and police dog.
Newfoundland - description of the breed and character
The Newfoundland dog has a powerful muscular proportional body, its movements are well coordinated. The massive head with a wide skull has a slightly convex arch and a strongly developed occipital mound. The nose of the nose is black in black and white dogs and brown in dogs of the appropriate color.
Muzzle covered with soft hair, square and relatively short. Small eyes are deep and wide-set. Small ears of a triangular shape fit tightly to the cheekbones. The body with a broad back is massive and strong, the chest is bulky and wide.
Between the fingers of the front straight limbs there are webs that allow the dog to swim and dive well. Hind legs should be well developed. The tail during swimming also plays an important role, so it is strong and wide in the Newfoundland at the base.
Wool from Newfoundland has water-repellent properties. The coarse hair is straight and long, the undercoat is dense and soft, and by winter it becomes even thicker. On the paws there are streaks, there is fur on the tail.
The traditional color for Newfoundland is a rich black color, but black and white and brown colors are also acceptable.
Dogs of the Newfoundland breed are large: the average height of the male at the withers is 71 cm, and the adult female - 66 cm.
The breed of Newfoundland is so clever that it has the ability to make important decisions on its own in a given situation. At the same time, a dog can simply ignore a meaningless command, and in case of any extreme situation, the team will not need it: the dog will immediately make the right decision.
Newfoundland is not a very good watchman, because he is completely devoid of aggression towards people. However, to come to the aid of his master, he is capable instantly. At the same time, a dog will not bite a person for anything, with its height and weight, it is enough to knock off the offender.
Newfoundland very delicately feels a change in the mood of his master. Therefore, the best team for this dog will be a request, not an order, and certainly not a cry.
Newf in life is a monogamous person and is very attached only to one family. And if suddenly circumstances develop so that he is forced to live with other people, then he can not completely trust them.
With children this big dog behaves very carefully, patiently and attentively. She will not indulge the capricious child in everything, but will always be nearby and protect him.
With other pets, Newfoundland does not conflict at all and perfectly coexists with everyone. He loves the dog and the guests of the house, however, if she senses the real danger emanating from the visitor, she will definitely let her master know. On provocation, the dog will never yield. And the point here is not in training, but in natural sensitivity and the desire to protect members of his family.
