Easter Island - airport

On Easter Island there is only one airport - it's Mataveri, which translates from local dialects as "beautiful eyes." It is located 7 km from the center of the island's capital, in the city of Anga Roa . It was Mataveri who discovered Easter Island for tourists, which is one of the most mysterious in the world. It is located 3514 km from Chile , so it was not easy to get to it, and even think about the tourist trip and it was not worth it.

General information

The construction of the airport on Easter Island began in 1965, then there was a NASA tracking station. She ceased her work in 1975, when the airport had already received aircraft. The Chilean government turned out to be sharp and practical. First, they took into account that in the event of emergency landing at the airport, the spacecraft must be able to land, and secondly, the management anticipated an annual increase in the number of tourists who want to visit the island. In order to realize these two tasks, it was decided to make a long and wide runway. Thus, in Mataveri it has a length of 3438 meters. The terminal itself was built not large, but there are several cafes and souvenir shops where you can buy all kinds of gifts for friends, if suddenly you forgot to do it, walking around the island.

Mataveri is served by only one LanAm airline, which also uses Easter Island as a transit point for flights to Papeete, Tahiti.

Where is?

Mataveri is located in the south-west of the island, on the outskirts of the city of Anga Roa . The terminal itself is located on the northern part of the airport, on the street Hotu Matua. The landmark can serve as a hotel Puku Vai, which is located from the terminal across the road. You can also go to Tuu Koihu and go south, so you'll be straight ahead in Hotu Matua, and 30 meters to the left of the airport.
