El Kusuko

In Honduras, there are many protected areas: nature reserves and national parks. Fans of ecotourism can not but rejoice, because many endemics - representatives of flora and fauna - are preserved only through the participation of the state. And the El Kusuko National Park is even a symbol of the Republic of Honduras.

Acquaintance with the park

It is believed that the El Cusuco National Park (Cusuco) is named after the armadillos that live throughout its territory. In the local dialect, armadillo is kusuko. The park covers an area of 234.4 square meters. km and has existed since January 1, 1959. Here several habitats are simultaneously combined, from semi-arid to moist forests, and from wet to dwarf. This is quite possible, since the height above sea level in El Kusuko ranges from 0 to 2425 m.

The task of the park is to preserve in its natural form the biodiversity of the Mesoamerican region, its species diversity. A number of hiking trails, stops and observation areas have been laid in the park for the convenience of visitors.

What can I see in the park?

The main attractions of El Kusuko are its flora and fauna:

  1. The natural favorable conditions of the reserve allow actively and luxuriantly to grow both in various coniferous tree species and deciduous. For example, wide-leaf tobacco grows on the territory of El Kusuko, and a variety of wild orchids and grapes will please flower lovers. It is noteworthy, but the diversity of flora attracts not only travelers, but also scientists. Periodically, the reserve conducts large-scale expeditions to study the local flora and symbiosis of some individuals. Recent research has revealed 17 new plants in Honduras.
  2. The pride and symbol of the whole park are mountain oaks , many of which have grown to 40 m in height.
  3. The animal world of the park is also attractive, although less diverse. Of the most vivid representatives of predators here you can meet a jaguar, but not all tourists are lucky. Much more often, salamanders and all kinds of monkeys residing on the territory of the National Park leave for the trails.
  4. Singing and beauty of exotic birds will not leave anyone indifferent, besides, about one hundred different species live in El Kusuko.
