Eye color in the child

For many future and already held parents, the eye color of a child is very important, and its genetics determine it. The vast majority of newborn babies have a dull blue hue of the cornea, which changes over time to a lighter or darker side. What does it depend on? First of all, the main role belongs to the genetic predisposition and place of residence of a person.

Each nation on Earth has a dominant color of hair, skin and eyes. For example: among the inhabitants of Latin America, 80-85% of the population, Ukraine and Russia - 50% and 30% - can be found brown eyes. The darker the skin of parents, the greater the likelihood of the appearance of brown and dark brown eyes.

Probability of eye color in a child

Most often the color of the eyes of parents and children coincide, but there are exceptions. Such facts are explained by the different contents of melanin - a pigment responsible for coloring the skin, hair and iris. In light-eyed and blonde people, the pigment is very small, there are no albinos at all. The red color of the eyes is the blood vessels, which are not masked by the pigment. Why is the dark color of the iris more common? Genetics suggests that brown eyes are a dominant feature, blue and gray are recessive. Therefore, in brown-eyed parents, the child's possible eye color is brown, and in gray-eyed mums and daddies, a kid with dark eyes can not be born.

How can one explain the fact that the color of the eyes of a newborn child is almost always the same? This is due to the activity of melanocyte cells. Small workers do not immediately begin to produce melanin. Gradually accumulating, the pigment stains the iris of the eyes in a genetically embedded color. At some children the turbidity begins to grow lighter, and by the half-year the kid looks at the world with bright blue eyes. In others, on the contrary, they darken. Remember that the baby's eyes can darken with time. But change the dark brown color to gray or blue - never. An exception is a malfunction in the work of melanocytes.

At the child of an eye of a different color

Such a violation of the process of producing pigment is rare, and should alert the parents. Heterochromia - when one eye is colored more intensively than the second, it can be full (the whole eye) or partial (part or sector of the iris). Sometimes a person lives with a different eye color all his life, feeling great, but cases when such a violation ends with cataracts are not uncommon. Therefore, parents who have noticed a discoloration of their child's eyes should immediately show it to an ophthalmologist.

When do children change their eye color?

In the first 3 months after birth, a change in the color of the iris should not be expected. Most often, the final changes occur during the first year of life. In some children - in the period from 3 to 6 months, in others - from 9 to 12 months. The hue of the eyes can change insignificantly, acquiring the final coloration by 3 or 4 years.

How do you know the color of the child's eyes?

To determine the color of the child's eyes, genetic scientists have developed a special table, which indicates the percentage of probabilities under given conditions.

However, no specialist is able to say with 99% certainty what exactly the iris will be in a newborn baby. Moreover, in case of mutation or disruption of melanocyte work, genetics is powerless.
