Garlic - cultivation and care

Cultivation of garlic, like any inhabitant of the garden, has its secrets and features. Here's about planting, growing conditions and caring for garlic, and we'll talk.

Garlic - planting, cultivation and care

There are two ways to grow garlic - from seeds and from teeth. Let's consider both.

Cultivation of garlic from the teeth and care for it

To plant garlic, you must choose the right place. The best are the land after cultivation of cucumbers, cabbage and legumes, the worst - after potatoes and onions. You can plant garlic in the same place only after 4 years. Before planting, the ground needs to be prepared - fertilize. This is done in the fall, make a complex fertilizer, the overripe compost or manure will also fit. Then we prepare the bulbs. Carefully having gone through them and having removed damaged, we divide them into teeth. It is better to do this before landing. Plant garlic can be under the winter - a month and a half before the onset of cold. It is necessary for the plants to take root, but they do not give germs. It is recommended a week before planting to prepare beds, so that the land has time to settle - on loose soil the teeth will go too deep. The distance between the teeth and the depth of planting is 8-10 cm, the distance between the ridges is 40-45 cm. After planting, we mulch the land with peat or sawdust, so that the garlic will overwinter well. But if the winters are mild, you can do without the latter.

In spring garlic is planted as soon as the soil moisture is sufficient. The distance between the garlic teeth is 8-10 centimeters, the depth of planting is 5 cm, and the distance between the ridges is 25-30 cm. Irrigation of garlic is required about once a week. The first watering along with the feeding should be done in late April or early May. The second feeding is done in June, and three weeks before harvesting irrigation and, accordingly, top dressing should be discontinued. When the arrows appear on the garlic, some of them can be left to form seeds, the rest must be removed. And you need to do this, gently breaking off the shoots, and not pulling them out - this greatly damages the plants. And of course, we must not forget about the timely weeding of plants - weeds in beds with garlic should not be.

Cultivation of garlic from seeds (bulbochek)

This method is less common, but you still have to resort to it, since with the constant cultivation of garlic from the teeth, it has the property of tinkering and degenerating. In this case, its updating is required - seed planting. It is advisable to annually make part of this update - first of all we grow single-diced ones from seeds, and of them full-grown garlic. To get the seeds we choose the best plants, which we leave the arrows. When the inflorescence envelope bursts, and the bulbs become color, they can be collected and, dried, stored until the time of sowing. They sow garlic in autumn (September-October) or early spring. Cleaning is done when yellowing leaves. Care and cultivation of garlic from seeds, then no different from the conditions of growing garlic from the teeth.

Cultivation of garlic at home

Some manage to successfully cultivate garlic at home, and not only for greens, as in the case of onions, but for obtaining a full crop. In fact, growing garlic at home is not much different from cultivating it under the open sky. Just remember that if you want to grow greens better to choose spring varieties, otherwise winter varieties of garlic will be better. Planting is made to a depth of about 4-5 cm. Further boxes with garlic are left in a bright place. If everything was done correctly, then within a month after planting it will be possible to treat the first greens.
