Gongor's House


The Gongor House is one of the oldest houses in the capital of Panama and the only surviving example of the domestic colonial architecture of the 17th century. Today it is the property of the municipality of the city. Weekly it hosts exhibitions of works by Panamanian artists.

General information on Casa Góngora

The house was built in 1760 and is named after the famous pearl merchant and businessman Paul Gongor Cáceres. After his death, the landmark passed into the possession of the local church. And in 1995 at the auction it was bought by investor Agustin Perez Arias.

Throughout its history the building survived several fires, but in 1998-1999 the Gongor House was completely restored, as a result of which its doors and balconies created with the help of unique wood processing returned their original appearance. Since 1997, Casa Góngora, in accordance with the UNESCO statement, is a World Heritage Site.

The house is considered one of the most important architectural examples of the colonial era. In the ancient area of ​​Panama, Casco Viejo , this is the only building that has preserved its beauty in its original form. Until now, such original details as wooden doors and windows, clay floors, wooden beams, soffits, round stone floors and pebbles have been preserved.

The modern Gongor House is a museum, which everyone can visit, while for the entrance there is no need to pay anything. The kind staff will be happy to give you an excursion . True, it is important to consider that it will sound only in Spanish. In addition, on Friday and Saturday, folklore concerts and other cultural events are held at the museum.

The Stone House of Góngora is located on the corner of Avenida Central and Sallé, at number 4. The best way to get to the old part of the city is by taking bus No. 5 and going to the Avenida Central stop in Casco Viejo.
