What is the difference between gouache and watercolor?
The main difference is how both colors look in the picture. Watercolor on paper lies transparent watery layers. Working with it, usually overlay several layers, thereby playing with the end result. Gouache paint is more dense. Applying several layers of gouache is meaningless, since only the upper dense layer will be visible.
What does gouache consist of?
It includes:
- finely chopped pigments;
- water-adhesive binder consisting of gum arabic (a transparent viscous liquid which, when mixed with water, forms a sticky solution, is extracted from certain types of acacia), wheat starch, fruit gum and glycerin;

How to mix gouache?
It will be best if you mix or grow gouache on the palette. If there is no palette, then it is not necessary to buy it, you can use an ordinary plate. Gouache from it is very easy to wash.
Before you start, mix the paint thoroughly until smooth. Add a small amount to the palette and do everything with it there: do it with the shade, mix it with water, etc. Diluting the paint with water, consider that if you make it very liquid, the color may turn out to be transparent, similar to watercolor, but the layer, most likely, will be uneven and ugly. Also the paint will unevenly lay down if you use too thick gouache. Experiment with the consistency, so that the gouache is laid flat and without lumps, you should get a consistency of liquid sour cream. When selecting tones, also take into account that after drying the gouache brightens.
What should I do if the gouache is withered?
Children very often do not close jars with paint as necessary, so gouache very often withers. To bring it into working state it is necessary:
- Pour a little water, so that it only slightly covered the paint on top.
- Close the lid tightly and leave the jar for a day.
- If the next day the paint seems too thick, you can drop a little more water and leave it for another day.
In such an uncomplicated way, it is possible to restore the gouache, which has dried up even before the knocking state, more than once. Of course, for professional paintings restored paint is not good, but for children's creativity at the time.
