Independence Square in Montevideo (Spanish Plaza Independencia) is the real "heart" of the capital of Uruguay . To visit the city and not to see this the center of local attractions in the style of French classicism is simply impossible.
What is the famous square?
In the center of Independence Square proudly towers an impressive marble monument depicting the national hero of Uruguayans - General Artigas. Directly beneath it is an underground mausoleum, where an urn with the remains of this fighter for independence is kept. Near the entrance to it there is always an honor guard, and tourists are allowed there only at strictly certain hours (Monday - from 12:00 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday - from 10:00 to 18:00).
Other noteworthy objects on the largest square in the city are:
- Salvo Palace , built in the Art Deco style in 1927 and thanks to its 26 floors is the tallest building in Uruguay.
- Theater "Solis" , considered the most brilliant in Montevideo.
- Jewelry stores , sheltered in the square and adjacent to the street Sarandi . Here you can become the owner of natural amethysts, both not subjected to faceting, and jewelry based on them.
- The National Museum of History of Montevideo , located in one of the oldest buildings of the city - Esteves Palace , which was once the personal residence of the President of Uruguay.
- The executive tower is the office of the Uruguayan president.
- Residential skyscraper in 1958 built in a height of 90 m.
On the square often hold various exhibitions. One of them, organized in 2009, attracted many tourists: more than 200 bears made of plastic, wood, marble, and metal surprised passers-by.
How to get to the square?
Independence Square is the last stop of most bus routes of the capital. Car enthusiasts can travel here by Florida, Ciudadella and Junkal from the north and south, Avenida 18 de Julio from the east and Buenos Aires from the west.
