Puka Pucara


Eight kilometers from Cusco is the ancient historical landmark of Peru - Puka Pukara. During the Middle Ages, this huge structure was a whole military base and its main purpose was to transmit signals to the nearest cities in Peru about an enemy attack. Now Puka-Pukara is an interesting archaeological museum in the open air, which is visited by a large number of tourists.

In Peru, Puka-Pukara, the locals nicknamed the Red Fortress. This name she received due to the property of the stones, of which it is built, to change the color at a certain angle of the sun's rays. Most often, this transformation takes place in September-October during sunset.

From a distance Puka-Pukara seems a very massive fortress. When you come closer, you will be surprised that the walls of the building are no higher than a meter, and the illusion is created by small hills on which the museum's buildings are located. A wonderful museum of Peru Puka-Pukar you can visit any day of the week from 9.00 to 18.00. Remember, there are not a single store near the sight, so bring water and other necessary things with you. You can get to Puka-Pukar by public transport or a rented car . From Cusco, sightseeing buses run daily.
