Lotefossen Waterfall

In the west of Norway near the city of Odda is located one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the country - Lotefossen. It is unique in that it has two channels that combine to form one powerful water stream.

History of the Lotefossen waterfall

According to local legends, before this place there were two water cascades - Latefossen and Scarfossen. Perhaps there was another granite ledge between them, which eventually washed away the water. Nevertheless, people gradually forgot about the Scarfossen waterfall, and instead of it both streams began to bear one name - Lotefossen.

Since the beginning of the 1970s, this waterfall is one of 93 water bodies under state protection.

Features of the waterfall Lotefossen

Tourists who arrived in the Norwegian commune of Odda, first go to explore the local nature. One of the main attractions of this region of Norway is the Lotefossen waterfall. It originates in the largest European mountain plateau - Hardangervidda, where the river Lotevatnet is filled. It is she, rushing down, and forms this water flow.

In the middle of the path Lotefossen meets with a granite ledge, which divides it into two separate streams. At the foot of the mountain they merge together, and a huge amount of water rushes down from a height of 165 m, breaking against the rocks.

The proximity of two water streams creates high humidity in this region. In the air here, microscopic drops of water literally hang. At the foot of Lotefossen there is a stone bridge. Right from it you can watch how the accumulated water leaves under the bridge, changes direction and rushes to the mountain gorge.
