Trollhauugen

Trollhaugen is the mansion of the married couple of Edward Grieg and Nina Hagerup, built in a very picturesque place and became the place of creative inspiration of the greatest Norwegian composer who spent the last 2 decades of his life here.

Location:

There is a museum of Grieg in Norway near his hometown - Bergen , on the shore of the fjord , which forms the lake of Nordosvannet.

History of creation

In translation the name of the mansion Trollhaugen means "Hill of trolls". The idea of building a residence dates back to the time when the Grieg family was going through hard times, disintegrated, and then the spouses came to reconciliation, and Trollhaugen became a symbol of the beginning of a new life. The building was designed by Shak Bull, Grig's second cousin, but the composer himself took significant part in the design and implementation of the ideas. According to his idea, the house should have been very spacious, bright, with an inspiring and calming atmosphere, with the flag of Norway on the flagstaff of the tower.

Spouses Edward Grieg and Nina Hagerup lived in Trollhauhen for about 22 years. In early September 1907, the composer died in a hospital, and was buried in a crypt carved into a rock in the grounds of the estate. After 28 years, the ashes of his wife Nina settled down here.

The idea of creating the Grieg Museum in Bergen, on the territory of the estate, belongs to it. Thanks to the efforts of Nina Hagerup, many things of the famous composer have survived to this day, and the house-museum preserves the situation of that time. It began operating in 1995.
