Fort Antoine

Fort Antoine is a place in Monaco , where you can feel the spirit of the Middle Ages, enjoy the opening panorama of the Mediterranean and simply stay in seclusion. Built in the eighteenth century by the order of Antoine I as a defensive structure, today it is an important landmark and architectural heritage of the country, and also serves as an open-air theater. The threat of the alleged war was over, and this fort was never used for its original purpose.

A bit of history

Fort Antoine is 750 meters from the Palace Square and the Princely Palace and is located on a cliff. It is a military-style structure with a corner watchtower, protective parapets and curbs and even operating cannons. Today, these guns are scorched, as a rule, on solemn occasions.

During the Second World War, the fort was almost destroyed. However, Monaco is known for its quivering attitude to everything that relates to the past. Therefore, in 1953, Prince Rainier III ordered to restore the fort, which was done. And it was after the perestroika that the fort acquired the form of an amphitheater.

The amphitheater seats 350 people, the seats are arranged in a stepped semicircle. Performances are held here only in the summer. Spectators are given good sunglasses for comfortable viewing in sunny weather. Sometimes the performances take place at night. Also every summer there is a festival of street theaters - "Fort Antoine in the city".

The entrance to the performances is paid. If you just want to wander around Fort Antoine, when there are no performances, it can be done for free. Fort Antoine deservedly is a favorite meeting place, communication, recreation for locals, and also one of the most visited places by tourists who want to touch the history of Monaco and admire the beautiful views of the city and the seaport.
