Museum of Public Transport

Sometimes it is very interesting and even nice to meet in a small city a modest museum of retro-format. It would seem that all exhibits of special value in themselves do not carry, but this is the memory and history of the city, and similar collections for local residents are extremely important. Also in the city of Liège, the Museum of Public Transport pleases all visitors.

Getting acquainted with the museum

Unusual for many, the Museum of Public Transport (Musée des transports en commun) is entirely devoted to the history of the development and transformation of urban transport in Liege from the appearance of the horse (horse-railroad city road, 1875) and up to the present day. Interestingly, the museum was founded on a voluntary basis by a group of ordinary lovers. Since it takes a lot of space to place exhibits, it is located in an old tram depot, which was restored specially for the museum format.

What to see at the Museum of Public Transport in Liege?

The entire collection of the museum is the real working models of the rolling stock that have ever worked in the city of Liege: first-horse cars, trams, buses and trolleybuses. Interestingly, around the middle of the twentieth century, the trolleybus network here was the biggest one, not only in Belgium , but also in the world!

Of particular interest are the unique steam locomotives and the first electric tram with soft couches of the year 1899, which served on the route for more than 60 years. All the copies are restored and on the move, which is very nice, most of them can be inspected even from the inside, sit on old seats, pull by the handles and turn the switches in the driver's cab. It also houses the old four-seater crew of the XIX century, transported in due time by the bishops of Liège. It is stored in the museum and a repair vehicle of a mobile team that could repair a malfunction of any complexity: the carrying capacity of the machine is about one ton. All interested persons can ride on an old tram on the preserved long-distance tram line.

In addition to the technology itself, this museum of Liege holds copies of the form of public transport employees, plaques indicating stops and routes, maps and scale models. When interest in the museum increased, its exposition was complemented by samples related to the topic of public transport in other cities of Belgium and even some other states.

How to get to the museum?

The museum can be reached by its own coordinates or by taxi, if it is convenient for you to move around. If you use public transport, then buses Nos. 4, 26, 31 go to both stops of the Hôtel de Police and Rue des Croix de Guerre. In any case, the museum will have to walk for 10-15 minutes.

Since the building of the old depot is practically not heated, the museum runs seasonally from March 1 to November 30 from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, lunch from 12:00 to 13:30, Saturday and Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00. Admission for adult visitors costs € 5, students, pensioners and groups from 15 people for € 1 less, children from 6 to 12 years old - € 3, under 6 years - free.
