Napkins for decoupage

Surprise, distrust, admiration - these feelings encompass many when they find out that bright painted patterns on boards , bottles and vases are not at all hand-painted, but applique in decoupage techniques. But to achieve such an amazing effect is possible only when all the rules of decoupage are fulfilled. And an important role in this is played by the right choice of materials: glue, lacquer and, of course, napkins. Without exaggeration, it can be said that negligence in the choice of napkins for decoupage often becomes the ultimate cause of disappointment in "napkin" technique in general.

What kind of napkins are used for decoupage?

Douglas-beginners can at first find it difficult enough to decide which napkins are best used for this technique. Therefore, we will conduct a small "educational program":

  1. Option 1 - print the image on the printer. In principle, any image printed on thin paper can be used for gluing. For example, you can print an image you liked on a color printer on ordinary office paper, and then gently peel off its upper part. But this option does not suit everyone. First, not all homes have a color printer. Secondly, to bring the paper to the desired thickness from the first time will only happen with rare lucky ones.
  2. Option 2 - buy a set of decoupage cards. You can also purchase a set of special napkins for decoupage (decoupage cards) in the store for goods for handmade. The pros of this option is quite a lot: beautiful motifs selected in a certain subject, bright colors, thick paper and a minimum of preparatory fuss. But everything overshadows the considerable cost of such a set - not everyone will dare to give a tidy sum for the first experiments in decoupage.
  3. Option 3 - use conventional paper napkins. Proceeding from the foregoing, the conclusion suggests that the most optimal in the price / quality ratio will be the use of conventional two - three - layer paper napkins. Of course, they have some drawbacks. First, the motives for them are found in a limited number and size. Secondly, the drawing you like can be cut off or vaguely printed. But the low price and ease in the separation of layers makes these defects completely insignificant, especially for novice masters. In addition to three-layer table wipes, four-layer paper handkerchiefs can also be used as the starting material for decoupage.

How to choose beautiful napkins for decoupage?

What should I look for when I go to the store for raw materials for decoupage? First, the quality of printing. It does not matter for what subject you choose beautiful napkins for decoupage: in retro or provence style, patriotic by February 23 or romantic by Valentine's day, fuzzy blurry outlines and faded colors can completely spoil the original idea. Secondly, the compatibility of the pattern and the main background of the finished product. Let's not forget that the main task of decoupage is to create a complete illusion of hand painting. So, the background of the motif from the napkin should either fully correspond to the background of the product, or be transparent. Thirdly, at first it is better to choose napkins with large images that have rounded outlines. It is these motives that will most easily be transferred to the product, without tearing or distorting it. And it's not superfluous to stock up a few napkins with the same pictures in case of unforeseen situations, because not always everything is perfect from the first time.
