Oscar Pistorius guilty of intentional homicide

Oscar Pistorius will have to return to the cell. The Court of Appeal reconsidered the scandalous and confusing case and found the Paralympic man guilty of the deliberate murder of Riva Stinkamp. The former sportsman is at least 15 years in prison.

Fatal shots

The tragedy occurred in Pretoria in the house of the famous "runner without legs" in 2013 on Valentine's Day. He shot his girlfriend through the locked bathroom door, supposedly taking her for a robber. The shock experienced not only the native 29-year-old girl, but the whole world. Pistorius immediately admitted that these shots were the work of his hands, but did not know that Riva was behind the door.

The neighbors of the sports star gave a testimony that made the policemen doubt the veracity of his words. They claimed that the day before the pair had quarreled. Having added that Oscar was jealous of the beauty. The investigation considered that this was an excellent reason for the murder.

Trial

In the fall of 2014, Judge Tokosila Masipa found Pistorius guilty of murdering his girlfriend, clarifying that it was not intentional, since prosecutors could not prove the fact of the defendant's malicious intent.

For their offense, the South African Paralympic had been sentenced to five years in prison, but a year later the lawyers were able to agree on his transfer to house arrest.

Appeal against the verdict

Mother and father of Riva did not insist on finding an amputee athlete in prison. As it turned out, the parents of the deceased secretly hoped for an extension of the term. They appealed and achieved their goal. In the courtroom, when the new verdict was passed, Pistorius was not there, but there was a mother killed.

The judges of the higher instance had many new questions to the accused, in particular, he refused to explain why he had phoned his ex-mistress Jenna Adkins two hours before the murder of Stinkamp.

Judge Lorimer Erik Leach, commenting on the decision, said that the defendant had to make sure who was behind the door before pulling the trigger.

According to the laws of South Africa, the ex-runner for intentional murder faces a minimum of 15 years of imprisonment. This period can be reduced only under exceptional circumstances.

The punishment itself and the date of its appointment are not yet known.
