Plaza Murillo

La Paz is one of the most beautiful cities in Bolivia and the actual capital of the country. Here the main attractions and the most interesting tourist places are concentrated. One of those is the Plaza Murillo (Plaza Murillo) - the main city square.

A bit of history

Plaza Murillo is located in the historic city of La Paz . The project of the square was created in 1558. Developed by its famous Bolivian architect Juan Gutierrez Panyaga. The square is named after Pedro Murillo, one of the most brilliant statesmen who supported independence of the country.

Earlier the square was the place where important social and political events of Bolivia took place. Many figures and fighters for independence were killed right here, including President Gualberto Villarroel, who was hanged on one of the pillars right on the square. Another vivid example of political violence is the execution of Pedro Murillo himself, which took place on January 20, 1810.

What is interesting about Murillo today?

And nowadays the square continues to be the most visited tourist place in La Paz. Walking on it, you can explore the following attractions:

  1. The cathedral is the main religious structure of the city. The cathedral was built in the second half of the XIX century. in the style of neoclassicism with elements of baroque. Among the features of the temple should be noted the altar and stairs, made of Italian marble.
  2. The Presidential Palace (the Palace of Kemado) is the official residence of the head of state. The exterior of the building is rather modest and does not stand out. What can not be said about the interior: on the first floor, in the foyer, stands the bust of former President Gualberto Villarroel, who, as already mentioned, was killed and hanged on a pole right there in 1946 .
  3. Palacio de los Condes de Arana - this building dates from the 18th century. Today, there is one of the most popular museums in Bolivia - the National Museum of Art.
  4. The National Congress of Bolivia also refers to the most important state structures. It is located directly opposite the Palace of Quemado. At one time this building housed a prison, a university and even a monastery. Today, its main feature is the clock, the arrow of which is not clockwise, but against.
