Plum "Opal" - description of the variety

The described variety was obtained as a result of the work of Swedish breeders as far back as 1926 when the "Renkloda Ulena" and "Early Favorite" plums crossed. As a result, a tree of medium growth force (up to 3 m in height) was obtained, characterized by a rather dense crown of rounded wide-conical shape. After flowering, which usually occurs on the fine days of May, the development of fruits begins.

If we talk about the size, then the plums of this variety have average sizes. On average, the fruits weigh up to 20-23 g. The largest creams reach about 30-32 g. It is worth mentioning that the fruits of Opal have an appetizing round form.

The fruits of the plum variety "Opal" are notable for their beautiful skin color. As a rule, the ripening of plums occurs by August. The skin itself, which in the beginning is yellow-green, by the last month of the summer acquires a bright violet-reddish color, sometimes even slightly orange. In addition to it, the Opal plum has a noticeable blue-gray wax coating.

Under a fairly thin, but heavily separated skin is a dense, but very juicy pulp of golden yellow color. In the center of the cream is a small, well-separated bone of elongated shape with pointed tips. When the fruits of Opal ripen completely, a pleasant aroma is felt from their pulp. Separately, it is worth mentioning about the taste of pulp. Pleasant, sugary taste has an easy sourness and is highly appreciated by specialists.

Advantages and disadvantages of "Opal"

Good aspects of the siphon variety "Opal" a lot. Judge for yourself! Firstly, it is a drain of early and early maturity: you can eat sweet fruits already in the first weeks of August.

Secondly, the yield of the variety exceeds all expectations - from each tree you can get up to 55 kg! However, there is a disadvantage here. The fact is that with large yields, the fruits shrink due to a lack of nutrients, and also lose their taste qualities. The problem is easily solved by removing excess buds. In addition, the variety does not require planting a number of other plums, since it is self-fertilizing.
