Ryumin's Palace

Lausanne is one of the most important cultural centers of Switzerland and just a beautiful city. Majestic cathedrals, original houses, bridges and palaces. About one of the beautiful palaces of this city - the Palace of Ryumin - and will be discussed this time.

From the history

The history of the Palais de Rumine, located in Lausanne, began in Ryazan, where a wealthy young man Vasily Bestuzhev-Ryumin loved Ekaterina Shakhovskaya, a representative of an impoverished princely family. A wedding took place, after which young people immediately left for Switzerland . Here they traveled a lot in search of an ideal place for a house and finally found it Lausanne, where they built a mansion of La Compagne d'Eglantine.

When Catherine Shakhovskaya died, her son, Gabriel, realized that he no longer wanted to stay in the family mansion and decided to go on a trip. He visited America, traveled Europe, stayed in Paris, wanting to capture everything he likes and inspires, took a great interest in photography. But going on a trip to the East, he, as if feeling unwell, went to a lawyer, and bequeathed to Lausanne a half million francs, so that 15 years after his death a building was built in the city, the project of which would be approved by the professors of the Lausanne Academy and the magistrates . Intuition did not disappoint the young man. During the journey through the East, Gabriel died of typhoid fever. And the very building, the Palace of Ryumin, really was built.

Features of the palace

The author of the project was Gaspard Andre. He created a majestic structure, decorated with mythical creatures, angels and lions. Until 1980 the building was occupied by the University of Lausanne. Now here are located cantonal museums of archeology, history, zoology, geology, fine arts, money and a library.

Also in the palace you can see portraits of the Ryumin family, generous and kind people, whom the grateful Swiss will surely remember for a very, very long time.
