St. John's Hospital

One of the oldest attractions in Bruges is the hospital of St. John (Hospital of St. John), which has neither more nor less than 900 years. Its walls were once a place for the lodging of wanderers, travelers. Here they treated the sick and gave them hope for recovery to those who had long since lost it. This place is an entire epoch, and we will discuss it in more detail below.

What to see?

It is interesting that the hospital worked until the second half of the 19th century, and founded it in the 12th century. To date, he, together with the Church of Our Lady , which is in the neighborhood, and the Museum of Gruthhus, are the most beautiful architectural ensemble that the locals especially take pride in.

Now in the building of the former clinic there is a museum, the main exhibits of which are some works of the famous Flemish painter Hans Memling, who in the 15th century was one of the most influential creative personalities of Flanders. By the way, that's why many people call the hospital the Memling Museum. To this we should add that in the art gallery there is a collection of paintings and other equally great Flemish artists.

In addition, in the museum-hospital of St. John in Bruges , rare documents, photographs, medical instruments directly related to the history of the building are stored. Be sure to check the old pharmacy, pay attention to the interior exposure. Admire the attic Dixmeide and the old dormitory.
