Canyon of Great America in the Czech Republic - an amazing beauty place, and it is located near Prague . Despite the fact that this is the creation of human hands, when visiting it makes an indelible impression. The canyon is even included in a zone of paleontology of international significance.
Origin of the canyon in the Czech Republic
Canyon Czech America is a limestone quarry, located near the castle of Karlstejn , 33 km from Prague . In this area there are 16 more quarries. Limestone in these places began to be mined even under the reign of King Jan of Luxembourg in 1320. The peak of production occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries, when the metallurgical industry began to develop in the country. Surprisingly, these careers and the canyon lake of Greater America are dug by hand.
In the early 60's the quarry was closed, and this place became popular among tourists, speleologists and local residents. That's how the most beautiful canyon appeared under Prague.
What to see?
The largest canyon in the Czech Republic, Greater America, has a size of 750x150 m. Its depth is more than 100 m, and the lake in the canyon is 18 m. Clear blue water and steep rocks make this place very attractive for walks. What can I do in this place:

- Monument to the victims of Stalin's repression. Near the Great America is the Canyon of Mexico. He is known for the fact that in the period of Soviet totalitarianism limestone prisoners were mined here. The canyon Mexico has steep cliffs, so the escape was impossible. The majority of political prisoners perished. Now a monument is erected in the quarry, which testifies to the enormous inhumanity of totalitarianism.
Features of visit
Officially to visit the canyon in the Czech Republic is prohibited. Penalty for penetration into the territory is $ 700. However, the police, which regularly runs around the canyon, have not ordered anyone else a fine. On the contrary, it seems that they protect tourists. A fence with barbed wire is installed around it. And not for nothing, because often there are collapses, and tracks and stones are slippery even in dry weather. Accidents are not uncommon here. If you decide to go for a walk to Czech America, then wear non-slip comfortable shoes: slippers, ballet flats and sneakers will not work.
How to get to Czech America?
The canyon in the Czech Republic is located near the village of Morin, to which you need to take the bus 311. The stop is called "Morina", the fare is $ 7.32. If you prefer hiking, then from the castle Karlstejn to the canyon you can walk for 1 hour (a distance of about 5 km).
