Zoo in Sarajevo

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a relatively small state, which is 90% covered by mountains, which means valleys and gorges. In combination with a variety of water bodies, the territory of BiH creates wonderful conditions for the life of a huge number of animal species, most of which are represented in the capital's zoo. In order to acquaint guests with at least part of the Bosnian fauna for the zoo had to take about 8.5 hectares.

What to see?

Sarajevo Zoo was founded in 1951. For over 40 years, the zoo has contained more than 150 species of animals, so it was undoubtedly a national pride. An enormous amount of public funds was allocated for the maintenance of animals, so that the zoo was inhabited and comfortable even by those fauna representatives who lived in a unique ecosystem. But this continued until the Bosnian war, which occurred in the 90's. This tragic page of history took not only the lives of people, but all the animals of the zoo. Some of them died of starvation, but most of them died from artillery or sniper fire. An animal was recorded, which last was lost - it's a bear. Then, in 1995, the zoo was completely emptied.

Restoring the zoo began in 1999. The animals began to arrive actively and measures were taken to expand the zoo and its development. It can be said that the zoo has begun to live a new life and even though the government is paying great attention to it, its best years have not yet come, as today it is home to slightly more than forty species of animals. Recently, a new terrarium has been purchased, in which several species of reptiles will settle. A territory of one square kilometer is also prepared for the maintenance of predators - pumas, lions and meerkats. It is planned that soon the number of animals will be no less than thirty years ago.
