Giant stone balls in Costa Rica were discovered in the last century, but appeared much earlier. We will tell you about this amazing sight in this article.
Unexpected find
In 1930, during the clearing of the tropical jungle, United Fruit Company workers were very surprised by the found group of huge stone balls. About this find was written in all newspapers and magazines. It just turned the scientific world on its head and made you think about many questions.
In 1940, the scientist S.K. Lothrop undertook to clarify the theory of the origin of stone balls in Costa Rica. There were assumptions that gold was stored in them, but this confirmation was not found. As a result, the scientist concluded that these are creations of ancient artisans who worked with granite. And, we can say that they were the first samples of decorative work of stone.
In total, there were found 44 stone balls in Costa Rica. Near them there were other elements of the life of the past era. Some ceramic remains indicate that the first balls appeared before our era. The ruins of the buildings that were near the place, the opening, say that the balls were made during the Middle Ages.
Where to look in our time?
Unfortunately, the original appearance of the stone balls in Costa Rica was not maintained. Many of them were taken to museums, where they act as a historical reminder, and to other buildings for decoration. On the original site there are only six balls, but they are not the largest or the original. You can admire them on the island of Kano.
