Tambo-Colorado

On the south coast of Peru is the complex Tambo Solorado. This is an adobe fortress, preserved from the time of the great Inca empire to the present day. In the language of the Indian people, Quechua Tambo-Colorado can sound like Puka Tampu, Pucallacta or even Pucahuasi.

A bit of history

Tambo-Colorado was once the administrative center of the Inca empire and the main post between the coast and the mountain peaks. By the way, through this ancient complex lay the "Great Road" of the Incas, or, as its name sounds in their language - "Khapak-Nyan". Here they met the supreme rulers of the Incas - the most important people in the state. The complex of buildings was erected in the XV century, under the reign of Emperor Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui.

In 1532 there was a terrible war, and Tambo-Colorado was completely plundered by the army of Atahualpa (ruler of the Quito region). Resigned to such an unpleasant situation, the Incas left this place forever.

The name of Tambo-Colorado

The name of the Tambo-Colorado complex is due to the Peruvian archaeologists and the still preserved paint on the walls of the royal palace. The fact is that the dry climate of Peru did not allow the ancient paint to completely disappear, therefore, in our XXI century, on some walls of the palace red and yellow shades of paint are seen. Scientists using computer reconstruction have even been able to recreate the image of the then-colored Tambo-Colorado. By the way, Tambo-Colorado is translated as "red house" or "red place".

Features of Tambo Colorado

An ancient landmark in the valley of the Pisko River is a complex of structures and a large area. At the time of the Inca Empire there was a temple of the Sun and the palace of Sapa Inka, that is, the emperor, and important meetings took place in the square. Today the complex of buildings is one of the main architectural monuments of the Inca culture. For particularly curious tourists there is a museum in which you can find all the information you are interested in about the great Inca empire.

Of course, over the long centuries, Tambo-Colorado has lost its former brightness, and no one is holding important events here. But just imagine: these are really authentic buildings. Before you is an object of living history, which has never been restored. And, of course, this archaeological site is unique. Is this not a good reason to visit the ancient complex? By the way, as a bonus it is possible to consider a picturesque panorama of a valley of the river Pisko and local mountains which opens from a palace of the emperor.

How to get there?

Tambo-Colorado is located at a distance of 270 kilometers from the capital of Peru Lima and 45 kilometers from the city of Pisco. Have to rent a car or catch a ride - public transport does not go here. The road to the required sights lies through the highway Via de los Libertadores. But the best solution is to book an excursion , for example, from Lima .
