The dog has cramps - what should I do?

When your beloved dog begins to involuntarily contract muscles, and he falls, it's hard not to be scared. There is nothing strange in that people in similar situations do not know what to do.

Why do dogs have cramps?

Involuntary contractions of muscle tissue - this is cramps. They are usually divided into tonic convulsions (which can be slow or prolonged). They are also divided into convulsions (abrupt contractions) and seizures of epilepsy (accompanied by loss of consciousness).

Frequent causes, which cause seizures in dogs:

  1. Disorders that are metabolic (low glucose, high potassium, or various kidney and liver diseases).
  2. Epileptic seizures are sudden seizures in a dog, the duration of which can vary from half an hour to several days.
  3. Inflammation caused by infection.
  4. Infectious diseases (peritonitis, toxoplasmosis, bacteria and fungi).
  5. Neoplasms of tissues and organs.
  6. Disturbances of cardiac activity (arrhythmia, tachycardia).
  7. Intoxication.

If your dog has a seizure and you do not know what to do, call the veterinarian immediately. Before the doctor comes, you can measure the temperature and drop 10-15 drops of valocordin into the tongue. Watch how long the cramp lasts, most often doctors ask about it. Only a qualified specialist can make the correct diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment. It usually consists of symptomatic drugs (which quickly remove the dog from the state of seizures) and specific (they are aimed at treating a particular disease). Independent attempts at treatment can lead to serious complications. And if the attacks become frequent - it can become dangerous for the life of the pet and lead to death.
