The Glacier Garden

According to many tourists and employees of travel agencies, a trip to the Swiss city of Lucerne can not be considered complete without visiting the world famous Glacier Park. The main theme of the park is the geological history of this region of Switzerland .

History of the park

The glacier garden in Lucerne is considered a unique natural monument, combining a historical museum and a geological park. And it all began when, in 1872, a local resident, Josef Wilhelm Amrain, discovered ancient fossils while digging out a wine cellar. The Council of Scientists decided to set up the Ice Park in this northern part of the city on Denkamalstraße Street. Thanks to this decision, we can plunge into the era of the glacial period and get acquainted with the geology, flora and fauna of that time.

What is interesting about the park?

In the glacial garden in Lucerne, there are a lot of interesting pavilions and compositions that you need to spend a lot of time acquainting with. Be sure to visit the GeoWorld section, the mock-up hall, the observation tower, the museum of the glacial park and the mirrored maze of the Alhambra.

Most of the park is reserved for outdoor compositions, which is a natural natural formation. The composition is covered by a white tent, which protects stones and cobblestones from the weather. Here is collected a huge number of giant boulders, which retain the prints of the glacial period. On some stones you can see traces of ancient shells, leaves and even waves. Especially fascinating look giant pits, formed millions of years ago under the powerful pressure of water. The deepest well has a depth of 9.5 meters, and a diameter of 8 meters. During these 9.5 meters you can observe a giant slice that demonstrates the beauty of the formation of ancient glaciers.

Section GeoWorld introduces visitors to the era when the territory of Lucerne was a tropical beach. It was about 20 million years ago, and in the mock-up hall you can get acquainted with exact copies of Swiss landscapes, like Mount Pilatus or the St. Gothard Pass. No less interesting is the fascinating collection of the museum of the Glacier Garden. There are skeletons of the most ancient animals that lived millions of years ago in the territory of Lucerne. In addition, you can inspect a collection of minerals that are several tens of thousands of years old.

The greatest delight among tourists is the mirror maze of the Alhambra. It consists of hundreds and thousands of mirrors, creating the most incredible optical illusions. Some models shorten the growth, others distort the figure, others transform the geometric figures. The center of this pavilion is a hall consisting of 90 mirrors. Due to the special arrangement of mirror surfaces, an endless labyrinth with long corridors is formed. Only one palm here turns into a huge plantation of palm trees. Special work is not to delude in this fabulous labyrinth of the Alhambra.

The territory of the park is well-equipped for walking. Here you can walk through the well-tended gardens and even climb the observation tower, from where you can see a beautiful view of the whole park. Just a few meters from the entrance to the territory there is a high relief "Dying Lion" . Its author is the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, who in 1821 carved the figure of an animal right in the rock. The sculpture is dedicated to the valiant Swiss guardsmen who fell during the August 10, 1792 uprising.
