Lomas de Arenas Regional Park


At 16 km south of Santa Cruz is the regional park Lomas de Arena (Las Lomas de Arena) - one of Bolivia 's favorite holiday destinations and the most popular tourist attraction in Bolivia . Such a popularity is due primarily to its stunningly beautiful landscapes: mobile dunes dominate here, consisting of very fine white sand, and with them there are freshwater lagoons, swamps, tropical forests and grassy savannahs.

General information about the park

The park was created in September 1991 with the aim of protecting dunes, lagoons and forests in which unique animals live. Near the entrance there is the Information Center, where you can get detailed information about the history of the creation and development of the park and about the tourist sites located on its territory: the Ecological Trail, the Agricultural Tourism Zone and the archaeological monument - the ancient ruins of the settlement belonging to the Chana culture. The park is managed by the Directorate of Managed Natural Areas of Santa Cruz Prefecture.

Flora and fauna

In the tropical forests of the park there are many animals: badgers, foxes, several species of monkeys, collar bakers, agouti, and also rare animals such as anteaters, opossums, sloths. Only bats here can be found in 12 species. The ornithological "population" of the park is also diverse: there are 256 species of birds here, with about 70 species "resident", the remaining birds migrating. Lomas de Arena is on the way of bird migration to Argentina, Australia and other places. In the park you can see a large tukana, crested karyam, a Brazilian duck, a royal tyrant, a rabbit owl, a white woodpecker, a striped cuckoo, several species of parrots. There are reptiles and almost 30 species of amphibians.

The park's flora represents more than 200 plant species, including several species of cacti, ants, several varieties of palm and mallow.

Tourist attractions

There is a beautiful beach in the park. In addition to beach recreation and surfing on the sand, you can go for a walk - on horseback or in a horse-drawn carriage - along the ecotourism, which stretches for about 5 km. Attracts the park and lovers of rural tourism - here you can observe different types of agricultural activities. And lovers of history will be interested to visit the excavations of an ancient settlement related to the culture of Chana - the only one in this region.

How and when to visit Lomas de Arena?

The park is open every day, except Saturdays, from 9-00 to 20-00. From the city of Santa Cruz to it can be reached by car in about half an hour; To go follows either Sexto Anillo, or first on Sexto Anillo, and then on Sinai. It is also possible to reach Lomas de Arena via Nuevo Palmar. Public transport to the park does not go. To be able to visit all areas of the protected area, it is better to choose a car with a four-wheel drive.
