World Oceans Day

We all know that life on Earth originated at the bottom of the World Ocean, which occupies up to 70% of the entire surface of the planet. The composition of the World includes four huge water areas: the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Indian oceans.

Today the ocean plays an important role in the life of each of us. With its help, the climate on Earth is regulated. The waters of the World Ocean absorb carbon dioxide and provide us with oxygen. Every year the ocean feeds a lot of people on the planet and gives them the necessary medicines. It lives a huge number of different living organisms. And if we want to ensure a healthy life for ourselves and our descendants, it is very important to take care of the ocean and take care of it. Indeed, in trying to preserve the health of the world's oceans, we are thinking about the future of our entire planet.

There is a special science - oceanology - engaged in the study of the World Ocean. Penetrating into the depths of the ocean, scientists are discovering new forms of marine life and fauna. These discoveries are of great importance for all mankind.

What is World Oceans Day?

At the end of 1992, at a world conference titled "Planet Earth", which was held in Brazil, it was proposed to establish a new holiday - World Oceans Day, translated into English by the World Oceans day and celebrated annually on June 8. Since then, this holiday is celebrated by all who, one way or another, are involved in the problems of the World Ocean. At first the holiday was unofficial. And since 2009, the World Oceans Day is recognized by the UN General Assembly as an official holiday. Today, 124 states signed a decree on the celebration of World Ocean Day.

Today, ichthyologists and environmentalists, workers in aquariums, dolphinariums and zoos seek to unite all efforts to protect the rights of marine life, as well as to fight for the ecological purity of the oceans and seas.

World Oceans Day has an ecological meaning. With the help of this holiday, its founders wanted to draw the attention of the entire world community to the situation in the World Ocean and to the preservation of its inhabitants. After all, the ocean is a unique ecological system that supports the biological balance. But human intervention has led to the fact that this balance is constantly violated: every year in the World Ocean, about a thousand species of marine life disappear.

We all know that today the problem of atmospheric pollution with greenhouse gases is very acute. In addition, the quantity and quality of drinking water on the Earth is deteriorating. The clogging of seas and oceans, the uncontrolled destruction of marine resources, gradually lead to the destruction of the whole ecosystem of the oceans. Scientists predict that by 2015 the acidity of oceanic water can increase by 150%, which will lead to the death of almost all marine life.

Every year on June 8, around the world, many different environmental actions are organized, with the help of which their organizers try to convey to all people the need to protect the World Ocean. On this day, various exhibitions, festivals, seminars, rallies, discussions on the sea theme are held. On this day there are calls to reduce unauthorized fishing for fish and other marine life. Indifferent people urge to stop clogging the sea depths with harmful industrial waste.

Every year, the celebration of the World Oceans Day is held under various mottos. For example, in 2015 it sounded like "Healthy oceans, a healthy planet".

Thus, celebrating the World Ocean Day, mankind has the opportunity to preserve nature, marine life and fauna. And such concern for the inhabitants of the World Ocean will prevent the extinction of many animals and plants, which will positively affect our lives in the long run.
