Attic stairs with own hands

The designs of the attic stairs are different in type - monolithic, portable, collapsible. Step ladder and ladder ladder make easy, but they have a number of drawbacks. Such products are constantly cluttering the passage and they need to be taken away somewhere, dragged and then re-installed. Monolithic staircases are very convenient to use, but not every house can put such a cumbersome device that occupies a large space. Let's look at the man-made folding attic stairs. If you have a small dacha, and the attic is used only occasionally, then such a design will be the most appropriate and effective acquisition.

Stairs to the attic with their own hands

  1. Consider the original design of the hatch in the attic, combined with the stairs. To make a hatch, we need a sheet of plywood 10 mm thick and a wooden beam 50x50 mm.
  2. We fasten the parts with screws, previously all, with glue. Pencil kerchiefs from the plywood serve to ensure that the diagonal is not gone.
  3. For the hinged mechanism we will need metal workpieces - a thick corner, a strip and a piece of sheet metal. You need to measure the angle of opening the stairs and make a template out of cardboard. Experimentally determine the location of the holes and drill them with a drill. The edges of the strip are rounded and cleaned, cut to the desired length.
  4. Some parts we have the same size, making the first mechanism, the second is made using clamps, attaching a pair of blanks together and drilling the necessary holes.
  5. We are trying to get a pair of ideal mirror lever systems.
  6. We screw the opening mechanism of the hatch and check its operation.
  7. Now you can directly make the attic itself with your own hands. Determine the maximum opening angle of the hatch, and produce markings on the bars.
  8. Connecting them together, drill holes and cut the workpieces to the desired size at the junction of the segments of the ladder.
  9. We make steps, we grind the edges with a milling cutter.
  10. On the strings we perform grooves (about 5 mm) in the places where the steps are fastened.
  11. We attach to the string of the step.
  12. We install the mechanism of folding the ladder.
  13. We connect the segments of the ladder together.
  14. We check how the ladder develops, how well the lever mechanism works, how accurately the grooved slots with the bolts coincide.
  15. We fix the ladder to the hatchway.
  16. Install the lever-spring mechanism to facilitate opening the hatch.
  17. Our ladder is ready, you can check its work. Then it should be disassembled for spare parts, apply a primer and two coats of varnish on all the wood blanks. We make the final installation of the ladder.

Good owners have long realized that it is not necessary to go out into the yard to climb the attic. This is especially true in the winter or when it rains heavily. The staircase to the attic , made by own hands and located inside the house, has other advantages too: the attic space is much less cooled in the cold season, which is very important in order to save money for heat carriers.
