Borgheby Castle

Borghebi is a medieval castle in the south of Sweden , in the municipality of Lomma. Today it houses the museum of the painter Ernst Nordling.

A bit of history

For the first time on this site the fortress was built in the 900's. During the excavations, the remains of defensive fortifications and a lot of coins, which are attributed to the reign of Harald the Bastard, were found. This shows that the fortress played not only a strategic, but also an economic role. Later in its place was erected another fortification - already in the XI century. But even from this building to our days, practically nothing has survived.

Locks on this site were erected, destroyed and rebuilt again. It is known that one of the buildings was destroyed in 1452 by Swedish troops, and the Danes in 1658 destroyed another one. Today you can see one of the towers of the XV century - it is preserved and stands alone. The eastern wing of the castle was demolished in 1860 and rebuilt in 1870. The main building, preserved to this day, dates from around 1650-1660.

Castle today

In 1886, the owner of Borgheby became the father of Ernst Nordling, and now in the halls of the castle there is a museum of works by this Swedish artist. Only part of the castle was given under it, but this is enough to feel the characteristic atmosphere of those times.

In this bohemian place you can not only see pictures of the famous Swedish painter, but also see his workshop and study, living rooms and other buildings of the castle.
