The valley of Nepalese Kathmandu is decorated with an ancient city and the same temple complex - Changu Narayan.
Historical facts
The complex rises on a hill 1550 meters above sea level. Its construction is associated with the name of King Hari Dutt. Buildings belong to the IV century. AD and are the oldest in the territory of Nepal . In the first half of the 5th c. On the orders of the Emperor Mandeva, on one of the stones at the entrance to the temple, an inscription was inscribed telling about the military prowess and successes of the ruler. Today it is still stored in one of the halls of the shrine. The Changgu Narayan temple is surrounded by a small town inhabited by the indigenous inhabitants of the country - the Newarians.
Legend
Changu Narayan sings the deity of Vishnu. The legend tells about the construction of the temple. In a battle with the monster Chang Vishnu, by carelessness, he killed a brahmana. For this he was cursed and expelled from the city. For many years, Vishnu wandered around the neighborhood and decided to settle in the nearby forests. Shepherds, herdsmen, noticed that one of the cows was losing milk. They followed the animal and noticed that it was being drunk by a black child living under one of the trees. The angry shepherds cut down the tree and saw Vishnu, who thanked them for getting rid of suffering. The brahmanas were surprised, and soon a temple was erected on the site of the destroyed tree.
Fire
The Changgu Narayan temple complex survived in 1702 a terrible fire, after which it was rebuilt. Most of the wooden structures of the renovated church belong to the XVIII century. The central building of the complex is dedicated to Vishnu. Before the sanctuary there is a statue of the god Garuda, dating from the 5th century.
Around the temple you can see all kinds of images from the stone, decorated with fine carvings of the Lichavi period.
