Stomach biopsy

Biopsy (excision) of the stomach is the study of the cellular structures of tissues in order to detect the presence of a tumor and the type of neoplasm to exclude or confirm cancer .

There are two forms of intestinal cell sampling:

  1. A hollow biopsy when tissue samples are taken during surgery after a surgical incision.
  2. Gastric biopsy with endoscopy in the upper gastrointestinal examination. In this case, the tongue is inserted through the preparation and the fragments of the mucous tissue are taken.

Procedure for biopsy of the gastric mucosa

A biopsy is performed in the clinic. A radiological examination of the stomach is preliminarily organized to make sure there are no contraindications to the medical procedure. A biopsy is possible only with an empty stomach, so eating is prohibited 12 hours before the examination.

Further:

  1. For the examination, the patient lies on the couch on the left side, with the back straight.
  2. An anesthetic is treated with his throat and upper part of the esophagus.
  3. Then, through the plastic mouthpiece, an endoscope is inserted into the larynx together with the tweezers. After the researcher makes swallowing movements, the device penetrates into the stomach. To obtain reliable results, cells from a biopsy are taken from different parts of the stomach. The endoscopist, observing the movement of the device through the image on the screen, performs the sampling of the material for the study.
  4. After the biopsy, the endoscope is removed.
  5. Tissues taken during the procedure are filled with paraffin (or other medical preservative) and make very thin sections that are stained and studied with a microscope.

The results are usually ready on the third or fourth day. Decoding of the biopsy of the stomach is the basis for determining the methods further therapy, since the doctor receives information about the malignancy of cells, the extent of organ damage and the need for a surgical operation.

Consequences of a biopsy of the stomach

As a rule, after biopsy, there are no significant traces on the inner surface of the stomach, and complications are extremely rare. With a tendency to bleeding, there may be a small outflow of blood that passes by itself. If, after a day or two after the procedure, there is a fever and vomiting with an admixture of blood , you should contact a specialist. In this case, drugs are prescribed to reduce bleeding, bed rest and a hunger diet, which after a couple of days is replaced by a gentle way of eating.
