How to use the compass correctly?

For some reason in society it is believed that only men are fishermen, mushroom pickers, berry-eaters and just fans of long-distance travel. What kind of inequality is this !? Are we, ladies, worse, or weaker? Or do not we want to escape at least a couple of days from all these pots and pans , washing machines and irons, children's whims and mother-in-law? Everything, it is decided, on the next holiday we go on a hike. It is only necessary to remember how to use the compass correctly, or to learn it again, and on the road. Well, for the cause!

Why do you need a compass, and what does it consist of?

It's clear, in order not to get lost in the campaign, we were told about this in the school. If anyone has forgotten, our magnetic guidebook is made of a bulb, a red and blue magnetic needle, put on a spire and a brake - a lever that fixes the arrow. At the top, the bulb is covered with glass, and at the very edge of the circumference of the upper wall of the bulb, the digits indicate the degree of deviation. It is also called azimuth.

The Russian letter "C", or the English "n", or the zero digit on the compass, where the blue arrow indicates - is north. A place with a Russian letter "Yu", English "z", or number 180, where the red arrow shows the compass, it's south. Accordingly, the line drawn perpendicularly points to the west to the left and to the east to the right. That's the whole trick about the composition and direction of the arrows of the compass, now we turn to the practical lesson, that is, orienteering on the terrain.

How to learn to use the compass correctly?

First of all, while still at home, you should check the compass for serviceability. This is done so. Place the appliance on a flat surface, wait until its arrows stop oscillating, and note the fixation number. Then, bring something metallic to the side wall of the bulb to bring the arrows back into motion. Once this happens, quickly remove the iron object and wait for the arrows to lock. If the number indicated by the arrows in the first and second cases is the same, then you can go camping. If there is even the slightest discrepancy between the first and second fixation of the arrows, we go to the store for a new compass.

Let's say that our compass is working, and go to a familiar forest park or grove. Choose an unfamiliar area for the first workout, so as not to be disappointed and do not give up everything without starting. After all, you do not want to get lost and live with a stubborn dislike of hiking for the rest of your life?

So, firstly, as experienced travelers say, we need to "get attached" to the starting point. And this point must be very extensive and recognizable. For example, a freeway, a large river, a power line, an extended clearing. So you can always easily go back, even if slightly and deviate from the original route.

Assume that the selected anchor point is the freeway. Slightly, a few steps away from it in the direction that you planned to go to, and turn to the highway face. And get up so that the desired path and freeway were approximately perpendicular to each other. Now slowly turn the device until the direction of the compass needle coincides with the direction "north-south". Attention, keep the compass in this case strictly horizontally, so that the arrows do not cling to the bottom or glass of the bulb. For the sake of loyalty, you can put it on a stump or straight to the ground.

Next, take a ruler, or pencil, or lying around a straight stick and draw a straight line through the center of the compass in the direction of your return, that is, towards the highway, and remember the figure indicated by the end of the stick or ruler. This will be the direction by which you will return home. And the figure to which the end of the wand, opposite to the return, will indicate, and there will be that route that you should follow adhere, venturing into the forest. Do not forget, the count goes from zero or letter "c" along the clockwise direction. And where the red arrow of the compass points, it's south and number is 180.

After walking through the forest and gathered back, take the compass so that the line drawn through the center of the device and the return figure indicates the direction straight ahead. Imagine that this direction starts from the center of your body, and beats into the distance an endless direct ray. After finding this position, slowly turn around your axis until the blue arrow points to the number 0 or the letter "c". As soon as this happened, you know, you are standing facing the direction you need to go.

That's all the wisdom, how to learn to use the compass correctly, the way you like and the bright impressions of the trip.
