International Day of Archives

The International Day of Archives is a holiday timed to the creation of the organization of the International Council of Archives, which unites institutions dealing with the accounting, storage and processing of documents and historical literatures in many countries around the world.

This holiday can be considered quite young. It was established in 2007, and the first celebration on this occasion took place a year later - in 2008. Although the history of the International Council of Archives (ISA) itself has a much longer history. It was founded in 1948 by the decision of UNESCO. The archive day on June 9 in 2008, thus, was simultaneously a day of celebrating the anniversary of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the UIA. In addition to this international organization, other large associations of employees of specialized enterprises and archivists took part in the establishment of the World Archive Day. In total, this date was supported by more than 190 countries of the world as a festive event, which made it possible to assign this international status to this holiday. In addition to this day, in many countries there are also the Days of Archivists, which are also usually associated with memorable dates in the history of archival organizations of a particular state. During the Days of the Archives, various events are held, designed, on the one hand, to honor and express respect for specialists in this field and their important work, and on the other, to educate the public in order to show the importance and significance of archival work for the country and each individual citizen.

Contribution of archives to the preservation of national heritage

The importance of the work of specialists in the archive business is difficult to overestimate. In their hands, figuratively speaking, is the history of the country and its inhabitants. The archives contain many historical documents that help create a holistic picture of the development of history, important, turning events. Archivists not only store these certificates, but also care about transferring them to future generations, making restoration of dilapidated materials and transferring archives to electronic form, as well as studying new and existing documents.
