Johannesburg Art Gallery


The Johannesburg Art Gallery is located in the business center of this largest South African city. The building, which houses the center of art, was designed by Sir Lachens, and supervised by Robert Houden. Finally, the structure acquired its present form only at the end of the last century.

History of the gallery

Initially, the collection, which was the basis for the creation of the gallery, began with Sir H. Lane. She was originally exhibited in London in 1910, and only then was redirected to South Africa.

A great contribution to the formation of this unique fount of world art has been made by Lady Phillips. She not only transferred to the collection seven paintings and a magnificent sculpture of Rodin. First, the gallery was located in the building of the University of Witwatersrand, but in fact, immediately begin work on the design of a separate building. The project was financed by the same lady Phillips - being the wife of a mountain magnate, she was not limited in means.

Officially, the building was opened for visits in 1915, although the architect's project was never realized until the end. In the early 40-ies, it was reconstructed and a small expansion of the building was made. Completion of the northern facade was carried out in 1986-87.
