History of Kantara Castle

Approximately Kantara Castle was built in the tenth century by Byzantine builders. Then it served to protect cities from Arab attacks and track major trade routes. The castle was built on the site of the monastery of the All-Holy Kantar Mother of God - this is reminiscent of the chapel preserved at the top.

In 1191, the island of Cyprus was seized by King Richard the Lionheart and the fortification of Cantar became a refuge for the Byzantine usurper Isaac Comnenus. In 1228 the castle was badly damaged by the actions of the siege of the Lombards and it was reconstructed. But, as he did not carry his original meaning, the local nobles decided to make a prison here.

Kantara Castle in our time

Climbing the top of the castle, you can watch a stunning view of the city of Famagusta and Nicosia . In good weather you can see even the mountains of Turkey.

The word "kantar" is translated as "arch", which is quite a lot on the territory of the building. On both sides of the castle there are massive twin towers. Walking through the fortification area, you will see many preserved water supply pipes, ancient barracks, punishment cells and places of death penalty.
