The Ghazi Khusrev-bey mosque

Among the variety of architectural and historical monuments of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the city of Sarajevo , the Gazi Khusrev Bey Mosque stands out, attracting with its original architecture, white walls and the harmony of the aspiring minaret.

The mosque is compared with the best creations of Ottoman architecture, built on the other side of the Bosphorus. However, one should not be surprised, even if it is a passing similarity, after all, the mosque was built in the 16th century, when the Turks ruled here.

The initiator of the construction was the governor of Sarajevo and the entire Ghazi region, Khusrev Bey, in honor of which the mosque was named. They say he missed Istanbul so much, and so he wished at least partially to recreate the atmosphere of his homeland in Sarajevo.

However, not only the mosque deserves the attention of tourists, but the whole complex of buildings erected around it.

History of construction

The construction was financed personally by Ghazi Khusrev-bey, and for the erection of the building he invited the famous Istanbul architect Ajam Esir. Works on the construction of the mosque were completed in 1531.

Ajam Esir brought to the architectural style of the mosque all the characteristics characteristic of the Ottoman direction of that time: the smoothness of the lines, the visual lightness of the structure, the strict decoration.

As a result, the architect managed to build a really beautiful mosque, completely satisfying the wishes of the customer.

What deserves attention?

The whole mosque, both outside and inside, deserves attention from tourists. Thus, the central hall is a square, the length of one side of which is 13 meters.

Above the hall is a dome. The thickness of the walls is two meters. Along the wall there are stairs, along which you can get to the upper gallery. On the perimeter of the whole dome 51 windows are provided, illuminating the hall of prayers.

Separate mention deserves a deepening on the dome, pointing towards Mecca - it is made of beautiful gray marble, and along the surface of the depression are citations from the Koran, gilded.

Among the buildings around the mosque itself is a fountain Shadirvan, built of marble. It is used for ablutions. Also around the mosque are erected:

It should be noted that for visitors who are not Muslims, the mosque can be visited three times a day: from 9 am to 12 pm, from 14:30 to 15:30 and from 17:00 to 18:15.

With the advent of Ramadan, the mosque is closed for visits by those who do not profess Islam.

The cost of entry (according to data for the summer of 2016) was 2 Bosnian convertible marks, which was approximately 74 Russian rubles.
