Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, which is located in the city of Brno, is one of the most important religious sites in the Czech Republic . It was built in the 13th century and became the first Catholic church in the city. Now the temple is one of the national cultural monuments of the country and is recognized as the most important architectural structure of the South Moravian region.

History of the church of Peter and Paul

The Gothic church was built in 1177. The order for its construction was issued by Prince Konrad II. Initially it was a small church, which only in December 1777 was given the status of the cathedral of St. Peter and Paul diocese of Brno. At the beginning of the XIII century due to the increase in the number of parishioners, two more towers were added to the church. In the XIV century, the presbytery was created here, the design of which has survived to our days.

Weather conditions and numerous wars of those times negatively affected the state of the temple. Because of this, he was repeatedly subjected to restorations. The most significant reconstruction of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Brno was held in the XIX century, when two towers 84 m high were built. It was supervised by the architect August Kirstein. The last restoration of the Catholic church was held in 2001.

If at first it was decorated in the Romanesque style, then with the addition of two 84-meter towers already acquired features of the Gothic.
