The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, which is located in the city of Brno, is one of the most important religious sites in the Czech Republic . It was built in the 13th century and became the first Catholic church in the city. Now the temple is one of the national cultural monuments of the country and is recognized as the most important architectural structure of the South Moravian region.
History of the church of Peter and Paul
The Gothic church was built in 1177. The order for its construction was issued by Prince Konrad II. Initially it was a small church, which only in December 1777 was given the status of the cathedral of St. Peter and Paul diocese of Brno. At the beginning of the XIII century due to the increase in the number of parishioners, two more towers were added to the church. In the XIV century, the presbytery was created here, the design of which has survived to our days.
Weather conditions and numerous wars of those times negatively affected the state of the temple. Because of this, he was repeatedly subjected to restorations. The most significant reconstruction of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Brno was held in the XIX century, when two towers 84 m high were built. It was supervised by the architect August Kirstein. The last restoration of the Catholic church was held in 2001.
Architecture and interior of Peter and Paul Cathedral
Numerous restorations and perestroika significantly influenced the appearance of the church. That is why the description of the cathedral of Peter and Paul should begin with the definition of its architectural style. If at first it was decorated in the Romanesque style, then with the addition of two 84-meter towers already acquired features of the Gothic. At the same time in its decoration clearly read the elements of the Baroque. - look at the tombstones of the bishops Václav Urban-Stüffler and Vincenti Josef Schrattenbach;
- appreciate the beauty of the sculpture of the Virgin Mary and the ancient organ, covered with gold and decorated in a baroque style.
Upon arrival in the city, you can not think about where the cathedral of Peter and Paul is located: it was erected on a stone cliff, so it can be seen from the remote ends of Brno. Two ascending towers, as if piercing the sky, are visible already at the entrance to the city. Having ascended to the observation tower, it is possible to appreciate the beauty of Brno and surrounding landscapes from a bird's-eye view.

How to get to the cathedral of Peter and Paul?
Gothic temple is one of the most important sights of Brno. That is why any passer-by can tell the tourist how to get to the cathedral of Peter and Paul. Next to it passes the road Dominikánská, which connects it with the center and other areas of Brno. At 160 m on both sides of the temple there are tram stops Šilingrovo Square and Nové sady. The first one can be reached by tram No. 12 and buses Nos. 89, 92, 95 and 99. Trams # 8 and # 10, as well as bus routes # 1, 2, 8, 9 and others lead to the second one.
