Leiomyoma of the uterus

The uterine leiomyoma (or also myoma, fibromyoma) is the most common benign tumor. It is formed in the muscular layer of the uterus - myometrium - and represents a node of a rounded shape. The size of this benign tumor can range from a few millimeters or centimeters in diameter, and also reach a size of several kilograms. The largest detected node of myoma weighed 63 kg.

Causes

The risk factors for the development of uterine leiomyoma are:

Also, one of the main causes of the emergence of the uterine leiomyoma is considered to be hormonal disorders, including a violation of the metabolism of estrogens.

According to statistics, in the leiomyoma, the uterus is found in 25-50% of women of reproductive age, usually after 30 years.

Classification of uterine leiomyoma

Depending on the number of nodes distinguish between single and multiple leiomyoma, and from their location - submucosal (submucous) leiomyoma, intermuscular (intramural), intercellular, cervical, and subperitoneal (subserous) uterine leiomyoma.

Symptoms of uterine leiomyoma:

  1. Menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). Menorrhagia are a characteristic sign of submucosal uterine leiomyoma. With the growth of the nodes of the myomas, menstruation becomes more abundant, lasts longer than usual and, as a result, leads to the development of anemia.
  2. Pain in the lower abdomen. Usually occur during menstruation. They can be either permanent or manifested in the form of fights. In rare cases, with severe complications, the pain may be cutting.
  3. Feeling of pressure and heaviness in the lower abdomen. Most often it is peculiar for intermuscular or subperitoneal leiomyoma, which have large sizes of nodes.
  4. Infertility and impaired functioning of the bladder or rectum. These symptoms are more rare.

It is possible to detect and diagnose nodal lymphoma of the uterus by ultrasound, in some cases, magnetic resonance imaging can be used.
