Museum of alcohol

The Museum of Alcohol (Spritmuseum) is an interesting attraction in Stockholm , not far from the museum of the Vasa ship . In it you can learn about the "alcohol history" of the country - about the types and ways of producing alcohol, the causes of the emergence of the Dry Law - and how simple Swedes tried to get around it, and also taste several types of alcoholic products.

A bit of history

The date of the opening of the museum of alcohol is 1967. Then it was located in the Old Town, in the premises of the Grönstead Palace . Until 1960 in this building there were warehouses of the wine company Vin & Spirt AB. The basis for the exposition of the museum was the materials prepared for the exhibition, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the company.

The location of warehouses and office was chosen not casually - the place is located near to the Northern Railway Station, and the products were more convenient to send. An interesting fact is that there was a special elevator in the building, into which was placed the whole car with alcohol.

In 2012 the museum moved. Now it is located on the island of Djurgården, and a much larger area of the room (it is 2000 square meters) has allowed to significantly expand its exposure.

What is waiting for tourists?

Today you can see here:

  1. The old equipment used to make the wine, and the moonshine machines used to make the drink first from wheat and other grains, and later, after the royal prohibition was issued, to use grains for the production of alcohol - from potatoes.
  2. An unusual spoon, soup , received the name in honor of the "first dish", prepared on the basis of moonshine, when pieces of meat, bread were simply crumbled into an alcoholic beverage, and then all this was eaten as a soup.
  3. Collection of wine labels .
  4. Wine shop where you can not only find out what the wine and vodka shops looked like before, but also learn about the Swedish traditions of drinking drinks, get acquainted with drinking songs, both old and relatively new. By the way, the tradition to print texts of drinking songs on leaflets in Sweden has existed for a long time - it is known that the brain under the influence of alcohol can simply forget the text, and with the help of leaflets all participants of the feast can sing songs with pleasure.
