In the heart of Stockholm , on the small island of Sheppsholmen, there is the Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Museet - Stockholm). There you can see one of the best collections of works by great artists and sculptors of the 20th century.
Description of sight
The museum was opened on May 9 in 1958. In 1994, the exhibits were temporarily moved, and the building was renovated, led by the famous Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, in the planning of the galleries he was assisted by Renzo Piano.
In 1998, the public was presented with a new image of the institution that fully corresponded to the exhibits. The first director of the Museum of Modern Art was Otto Skeld, who not only founded, but also significantly expanded the unique collection.
Another head of the institution named Pontus Hulten bequeathed to the museum his own collection, which includes 800 exhibits together with a library and archive. Some of them can be seen in a special gallery, while others are on display at a permanent exhibition.
In the museum there are more than 100 thousand real works of art created by world famous masters, who are classics in the modern world. Here you can see the works:
- Cubist and Surrealist Pablo Picasso;
- the Italian surrealist Jorodjo de Chirico;
- avant-gardist Kazimir Malevich;
- Vasily Kandinsky and other famous authors.
In 1993, two paintings by Georges Braque and six by Picasso were stolen from the museum. Thieves entered the museum building through the roof. The total cost of work is estimated at about 50 million dollars. It was possible to return only 3 masterpieces of Pablo, the rest are still in search.
Description of the collection
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Stockholm is considered one of the best places of its kind in Europe. The permanent exposition here is divided into 3 parts and was created according to this principle:
- present time;
- The future - the hall is represented by works from 1940 to 1970;
- a new time - here you can see works of art from 1900 to 1940.
The museum stores unusual exhibits, which not everyone can be understood. For example, the work of Robert Rauschenberg "Goat". It is a scarecrow made of a dead animal and sprinkled with paint. The exhibit is in the car tire and stolidly looks at the public.
In the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, the sculptures of Alexander Calder, the Swiss expressionist Alberto Giacometti and the famous towers of the Constructivist Vladimir Tatlin (Monument of the Third International) deserve attention. Attraction of visitors' sight and such works:
- painting by Chelsea Girls, its author is Andy Warhol;
- picture "The Mystery of William Tell", created by Salvador Dali;
- famous prison ward, written by Edward Kinholtz, etc.

Features of visit
Initially, the entrance to the museum was made free, but in 2007 the administration of the institution established a fee of $ 11.50 for adults, children under 18 years - free. On certain days there are discounts.
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Stockholm works on this schedule:
- Tuesday and Friday from 10:00 to 20:00;
- Wednesday and Thursday - from 10:00 to 18:00;
- Saturday and Sunday - from 11 to 18:00;
- Monday - closed.
The establishment has a restaurant, as well as a souvenir shop and a workshop where everyone can join art.
