Norrviken

In fairytale Sweden there are many sights . Among the castles , islands , national parks and sculptures you can visit another interesting place - the botanical garden of Norrviken.

More about Norrviken

Norrviken is located in the southern province of the Kingdom of Sweden - in Skåne. The creator of the garden is a scientist biologist and breeder Rudolf Abelin, a true master of his craft. He was the first to realize in the Royal Horticulture the idea of placing different zones of the garden along a single central axis. Similar options for the design of the park space often met before only Italy.

The axis begins directly from the main entrance, goes through the curbs and further the baroque garden with the manor and rests on an artificial pool near the beech forest. Heading inland along the axis, the visitor admires the cherry orchard, the mulberry arch, the antique greenhouse, which goes to the marvelous Japanese garden on the hill. It is replaced by rhododendrons of the English Garden and other cozy water gardens. The range of flowering plants is mostly soft and pastel tones.

Previously, the site of the garden was wild forests and untreated areas. The main idea of the scientist - all areas of planting must necessarily harmoniously fit into the surrounding landscapes, flow one into another, be as harmonious as possible and look natural. Under the direction of Abelin, work was conducted in the Norviken garden for 35 years: from 1906 to 1942.

What is interesting Norrviken's garden?

Let's find out why tourists come to the garden:

  1. Plants. The first plantings of the famous biologist were wooded gardens on the summit and the hillside to protect all future work from the cold air of the northern winds. All the inner zones of the garden are the re-creation of historical or modern garden styles. The hedge of the garden is a bright and blooming perennial plant, which even today looks beautiful.
  2. Zoning. Baroque garden in front of the manor stands out well among dense forests and bush areas. In the garden Norrviken grows and the oldest kiparisovnik Lawson. On the south side of the building is a beautiful pond, near which grow hydrangeas, sedge, lilies and red-leafed Japanese maple. From other areas of Norrviken the water garden is separated by thickets of junipers and rhododendron. And, if you pass through them, then you will fall into the grotto of charming flowers, where a miniature waterfall gurgles.
  3. Maple. On the other side of the manor along a rocky slope on a slope you will come to a massive Japanese maple. Paradox, but in nature this plant is usually of inexpressive size. Here it grew into a strong and branchy tree, burning in autumn with burgundy and red leaves.
  4. Japanese garden. Then you will get to the once-former gravel pit, and now - the Japanese garden with a live stream. All zones and areas of the garden and after the death of Rudolph Abelin are annually improved and updated.

Every morning in the morning all the paths are smoothed with rakes, so that every visitor feels like a pioneer. In the 21st century, Norrviken's garden is gaining popularity among tourists, sculptural art exhibitions and other thematic events are held here.

Norrviken in our days

The Swedish State Museum has nominated Norrviken's garden for the status of a cultural and national reserve. Norrviken is the largest preserved historical gardens in the Kingdom of Sweden.

Currently, his fate is seriously threatened by a number of commercial lobbied projects. The municipality in court tries to challenge the decision on the development of the garden of the Bostad City Council and transfer the entire territory to the construction consortium Peab.

If the defenders of Norrviken's garden lose this dispute, then the entire uniqueness of the created environment will be destroyed and lost. The forests of the park will significantly reduce the area, after which most of Norrviken's landscape and wildlife will die, as the changes in the microclimate will be irreversible.
