Dinaric Highlands

The Dinaric Highlands are located in the north-west of the Balkan Peninsula. Its length is 650 kilometers and stretches it across the territory of six countries including Bosnia and Herzegovina . The mountain system is an alternation of plateaus, ridges, disappearing rivers and hollows, the latter is precisely BiH. The uniqueness of this natural object is that it is one of the few places in Europe where natural forests are preserved.

Relief

The relief of the Dinaric plateau is very diverse, limestone plateaus and block ridges are connected to one mountain system, which are separated by river gorges, which have the form of canyons. The deepest canyon not only in this mountain system, but also in the whole of Europe is the canyon of the river Tara. Its depth is more than one kilometer.

Dinaric Highlands has more than six mountain ranges, whose height was about or more than 2000 meters. One of them is Dinara, the height of the massif is 1913 meters.

Climate

The climate in different parts of the Dinaric Highlands differs significantly, mainly depending on how far the site is from the sea. So, on the Adriatic coast the climate is subtropical Mediterranean, and in the northeast of the mountain system - moderately continental. The summer in all parts is warm, only in the western part of the upland it is dry, and in the eastern part it is damp, as near the Adriatic Sea. It also promotes mild winter, the temperature on the eastern side of the highlands varies from 2 to 8 degrees Celsius throughout the cold period. Therefore, tourists visit these places all year round.

Flora and fauna

Most of the territory of the highlands is covered with natural spruce-fir and broad-leaved forests. And at the same time, the mountain system has many carrots that are almost completely devoid of any vegetation. In dense forests and canyons with rivers, many animals live - from several species of crustaceans to brown bears and lynx. In these places also live a lot of bats.
