On the edge of the world: 8 most remote corners of the planet

However unreal it may seem to you, but in the world there are places where in severe weather conditions, in complete isolation from civilization people live a normal life. We list the most remote corners of our planet. Believe me, after reading you will even more appreciate the area in which you live.

1. Group of islands Kerguelen, Indian Ocean.

They belong to the Southern and Antarctic part of France. Interestingly, before the beginning of the 20th century Kerguelen was used exclusively as a raw material appendage of the country. The French established a whaling base here. The most terrible thing is that literally for a couple of decades all the seals and cetaceans were destroyed ... But the main thing is not this, but the fact that Kerguelen is located 2,000 km from Antarctica. The climate on its territory is severe, rainy and windy. The highest temperature is + 9 ° C. To date, this archipelago is used for scientific research of the French government. As for the population, in the winter 70 people live and work here, and in summer more than 100. The most attractive on this remote site of our planet is the flora and fauna. Here live rabbits and ... domestic cats, which were once imported by immigrants. Also on the islands you can see seabirds, penguins, seals. And nature. ... What can you say, just look at these photos!

2. Tristan da Cunha Islands, the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean.

In their capital, Edinburgh, there are only 264 people. There is a school, a small hospital, a port, a grocery store, a police station with just one employee, a cafe and a post office. In Edinburgh, two churches have been built, Anglican and Catholic. The nearest town is at a distance of 2 000 km. The highest temperature is + 22 ° C. By the way, now no one else will complain about the weather. Do you know why? Yes because on these islands gusts of wind reach 190 km / hour. And still here lives the smallest flightless bird - Tristan cockerel.

3. Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen Archipelago, Norway.

The largest settlement in the Norwegian province of Svalbard, whose name is literally translated as "cold edge", was founded in 1906. On its territory there is an underground World Seminar, built on the case of a global catastrophe. Interestingly, in Longyearbyen, neither cars nor houses are ever closed. Moreover, the car door is not locked here, so that, in case of anything, everyone could hide from a polar bear. That is why outlying houses and kindergartens resemble fortresses, and, going out for a walk, each resident takes a gun with him.

Since 1988, it is forbidden to keep cats in Longyearbyen. It is also interesting that the unemployed and the elderly are not allowed here. Pregnant women are immediately sent to the "Big Land". Moreover, the law is forbidden to die, because there is no cemetery here. If someone decides to leave the world different, he should leave the island. By the way, as regards the population, in 2015 it was 2,144 people.

4. Oymyakon, Yakutia, Russia.

Oymyakon is also known as the Pole of Cold. It is located to the south of the Arctic Circle. The climate here is sharply continental and, despite the fact that the maximum life expectancy is 55 years, 500 people live in Oymyakon. By the way, in January the thermometer's column drops to -57.1 ° C, and the children are not allowed to go to school only if the window is -50 (!) ° C. In winter, cars are not drowned out. After all, if this happens, it will not be possible to start them before March. The duration of the day in Oymyakon in summer is 21 hours, and in winter - no more than three hours. Most of the local work as shepherds, fishermen, hunters. On the Pole of Cold, not only the climate, but also its fauna is amazing. Here breed horses, whose body is covered with thick hair 10-15 cm long. True, there is nothing to say about the flora, because nothing really grows in Oymyakon.

5. Minamidayto, Okinawa, Japan.

This is a Japanese village with an area of 31 km2 and a population of 1390 people. On the Internet, it is impossible to find detailed information about how people live in this isolated area. It is known that the climate is subtropical (warm summers and mild winters). The territory of Minamidayto is delicious. It is formed by a coral reef and is completely covered with sugar cane, the main agricultural crop of this region. Also here you can see the rarest plants, including mangroves. The island is often prone to typhoons.

6. Alert, Nunavut, Canada.

Alert is the most northern settlement in the world. In 2016, its population was only 62 people. There are no permanent residents, but there is always a research and military personnel. Alert is located 840 km from the North Pole, and the nearest Canadian city (Edmonton) is 3,600 km. The climate in this area is severe. In summer, the maximum temperature is + 10 ° C, and in winter - 50 ° C. Since 1958 there is a military base here.

7. Diego Garcia, the Indian Ocean.

The area of the island leaves only 27 km2. It is a lagoon surrounded by coral reefs. The climate here is hot and windy. The indigenous inhabitants of Diego Garcia are Chagostas, who were evicted from the island in the 1970s (about 2,000 people). And in 1973, the US military base was built on its territory. In addition, if the Chagossians wanted to settle again in their native territory, they would not succeed. So, in 2004, the UK issued a decree prohibiting its inhabitants ever to return to Diego Garcia. Unfortunately, now in this tiny paradise there is a military infrastructure and a tank farm.

8. McMurdo, Antarctica.

This is a modern research center. Also McMurdo is the only settlement in Antarctica with a permanent population (1,300 people). Here there are three airfields, a greenhouse in which fruits and vegetables are grown, the Church of the Snows, an extra-denominational Christian church. Moreover, there are four satellite television channels on McMurdo, as well as a stadium, where football matches are frequently held between station employees.
