Preparing plants for winter

Trees, bushes and other garden plants that are in your garden, with the approach of winter, must be prepared for the coming cold. There are general principles for the preparation of garden plants for winter:

  1. Top dressing. Since the middle of summer, plants are no longer fed by nitrogen fertilizers, which contribute to their growth. To make the vegetation period complete faster, potash and phosphorus fertilizing are introduced.
  2. Pruning. It is necessary to cut the damaged branches, remove from the site the plant remains and dry leaves, in order to reduce the likelihood of pests and pathogens.
  3. Shelter. Garden plants differ in their level of frost resistance. The plants of the first year of life, which have a shallow root system, are particularly sensitive to colds. It is recommended to insulate trees and shrubs in the vicinity of the trunks. As a material for insulation use peat, dry leaves, lapnik, humus.
  4. Watering. For the winter it will be useful to water almost all types of trees and shrubs.

Autumn preparation of trees for winter

To determine the degree of readiness of trees for winter, investigate the degree of lignification of their main and lateral shoots. If lignified about 50% of the length of a year's growth, the plant is poorly prepared for winter, if 75% is satisfactory, if 100% - can well tolerate winter. Poorly prepared trees need to be provided with an additional shelter.

In autumn, whitewash tree trunks.

Preparation of decorative shrubs for the winter

When preparing the bushes for the winter, it is necessary to cultivate the soil around them - to produce its mulching and fertilizer. Shrubs, in which the kidneys can freeze in winter (for example, budlei or roses), are plowed with earth, humus or compost.

For bushes, special shelters are being built: poles made of polyethylene film or non-woven materials stretch on stakes located around plants.

Proper preparation will help your garden plants survive the winter.
