Reserve "Meteorites Henbury"

In 132 km from the Australian city of Alice Springs there is an amazing place - reserve with the name "Meteorites Henbury". And it is surprising by its origin - the reserve "Meteorites Henbury" was formed as a result of a collision of meteorites with the earth, as a result of which a number of craters of different diameter and depth formed on the field. To date, the reserve "Meteorites Henbury" is considered the best crater field on Earth.

Dates and Names

According to scientists and researchers, the crater field was formed as a result of the meteorite falling to Earth more than 4 thousand years ago. In those distant times, the meteorite, disintegrating into separate parts in dense layers of the atmosphere, collided with the Earth at an enormous speed (about 40 thousand km / h), resulting in the formation of craters, whose diameter is from 6 to 182 meters, and the depth to 15 m.

European scientists crater field was discovered in 1899, but a great interest in the scientific community, it did not cause until in 1930 near the reserve "Meteorites Henbury" did not happen the fall of another meteorite, which was named Karund. Immediately after this event, a group of research scientists was sent to Australia, who found more than half a ton of the meteorite fragments (they had an iron-nickel composition), the largest of which was about 10 kg. The result of these studies was the scientific work "Henborne Meteorite Craters in Central Australia", authored by one of the research scientists AR Alderman.

It is interesting

By the way, the name of the reserve "Meteorites Henbury" does not originate from the name of the fallen meteorite, but from the pasture, which was in the immediate vicinity of the crater field, which belonged to people from the English city of Henbery.
