Botanical Garden. George Brown

Botanical Garden. George Brown is one of Darwin's most famous landmarks, the capital of the Northern Territory of Australia . The garden is located 2 km from the business center of Darwin. It is famous not only for its collection of the Australian tropical flora - the garden is one of the few in the world where estuarine and marine plants grow in natural conditions.

General information

The garden was created in 1886, and its collection originally included agricultural crops (in fact, the purpose of creating the garden was to study the possibility of growing some crops in the tropics) and a few ornamental plants. The garden is named after George Brown, under whose leadership he was rebuilt after Hurricane Tracy, which in 1974, after falling on this terrain, destroyed almost 90% of the garden plants. He got this name in 2002, and George Brown, who worked in the garden from 1969 to 1990, was elected Lord Mayor of Darwin in 1992.

Today in the garden you can admire the unique collections of plants and just have a good time with the whole family - it is equipped with toilets, a playground. In the garden there is an information center. Here is the largest in Darwin decorative fountain, there are waterfalls.

The botanical garden contains a large collection of tropical rain forests in the north of Australia: wild tropical vineyards, mangrove communities, representatives of the flora of the tropical rain forests of the island of Tivi , unique endemics of the slopes of Arnhemland. There are more than 400 species of palm trees, ginger, baobabs, bottle-trees, bromeliads, cicadas, Guiana kurupita, or "tree of cannonballs", several species of orchids, helikonia.
